May is a very special month for us here on the farm, we will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary on the 27th! It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know our land and neighboring communities. We’ve experienced so much this past year, and have to admit it’s been a steep learning curve! There’s been plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, but luckily the smiles rule all as we embrace our dream of pursuing a sustainable livelihood that encourages others to do the same by offering quality organic produce and fun educational experiences that connect you and others to health and nature.
Earth Month & #BVOHealthyPlanet
Last month was Earth Month, and as we wrapped up the celebrations we became inspired to live a more sustainable lifestyle. If you ever wondered what you could do for a simple Earth friendly practice, a great place to start is by reducing plastic waste. Join us for a community challenge to make changes towards a more plastic-free lifestyle.
Here are a few tips we learned along our journey:
- Invest in a refillable Water Bottle – This is a favorite tip since it is also a wellness hack. When you have you personal handy water bottle at you side, it’s easy and convenient to be encouragement to drink more water wherever you are! The four things we look for in a water bottle: durability, stylish colors (if needed, lol), larger container size, and obviously free from leaching chemicals.
- Buy in Bulk – Most grocers now offer a bulk food section. Ditching the plastic packaging and buying in bulk allows for a less expensive product and the ability to customize your quantity. You can find: nuts/seeds, dried beans, grains, nutritional yeast, dried fruit, nut butters, flours, pastas, oils, spices, and even Himalayan Pink salt, another favorite! We fill different sized Mason Jars with our bulk items and reuse the plastic bags. Take it a step farther and buy or make you own reusable bags to carry your goods home.
- Say Farewell to Straws – These tiny plastic products do major harm to our ocean environment, it takes 200 years for one plastic straw to break down. Sea bird populations have dropped more than 60% in the last ten years. Choose metal straws or reusable and recycled straws when enjoying a beverage, but only use recycled if you’re going to keep reusing! You can find either at a local natural food store or online.
We hope you will join us on our journey to sustainability and doing out part to make this beautiful planet healthy for all beings! Share your journey on social media and hashtag #BVOhealthyplanet.
